Wheelers leather balmBaltimore large oiled leather messenger bag

Leather messenger bags can last for years providing you spend a little more and you give it a little TLC every now and again.

Leather does cost more, but you don’t need to pay the earth to get good leather messenger bags, not unless  you want to pay for a designer version and even if you do it does not follow that it's quality reflects the price.

But what you do get from leather is the sort of material that will take all the knocks that life throws at it  and chances are will actually look better in a few years’ time as it grows old gracefully.

All it asks from you is a little bit of good quality leather polish every now and again - never apply too much as that will darken the finish, but even a relatively new bag will literally soak up polish giving it an extra layer of protection.

Think about it. We wear our messenger bags outside everything - over the shoulder, over your shirt, over your jacket and over your coat - in other words it is on the outside of everything and has to take all that the worst of the weather can throw at it.

Let's be honest it wouldn't be the first time that you have used your bag as an impromptu hat/umbrella when caught out in a downpour - you stay dry (ish), but your bags sure don’t.

But be careful, polished leather is generally pretty shower proof, but it is not waterproof and a good soaking will do lasting damage including the risk of staining and in some cases it causes the leather to lose all its oils and turn brittle as it dries.

That is where a good quality leather polish such as Wheelers leather balm as recommended by Blokesbags, comes into its own, it helps keep the leather of messenger bags supple and rich and able to repel the first drops of rain.

Having said all that, don't push your luck. If you want your bag to last and last then treat it with the respect it deserves. If you do, the bag you invested in will repay you with years and years of use.
