Bags are carried by men across Europe and Asia, but other than for holidays they have been a long time coming to the UK.
But times they are a changin and unless you want to look like Michelin Man on a bad day you need somewhere to put your mobile phone, wallet, ipod, glasses, sunglasses, passport, pens et al.
Not everyone agrees and whilst many men carry laptop bags, briefcases and holdalls as a matter of course, few actually realise or acknowledge they are carrying a bag.

At the bottom of my wardrobe is a black holdall that I have been using for years. The last time I went away for a weekend with my girlfriend she made a comment about my choice of luggage. I had never given much thought about bags for men in the past but it was pointed out to me, in no uncertain terms, that mine was nearing the end of its life. I can`t find the heart to throw it away so my overnight bag in now hiding in the wardrobe. It`s my girlfriend`s birthday in January and we are planning a trip away so I`ll have to look at some travel bags for men. I don`t think I can get way with using old faithful anymore so a new type of stylish bag is on the agenda. I`ve already looked at a few manly bags and one in particular has captured my eye. It`s an oiled brown leather holdall that looks really amazing and you can just tell that it will look fabulous in the years to come. I`m not saying I`m tight or anything but I want to look at bags for men that represent great value for money. I made my old bag last long enough; I`m hoping the new one will last for a similar amount of time.
Be they for laptops, files, or a change of clothes on an overnight stay, there`s a wonderful selection of mens bags available that would make excellent Xmas gifts. Santa could soon be delivering one of these fine bags down the chimney and any lucky male that received one as a gift would have something to smile about this Christmas. You might know a fella who loves messenger bags and think that his old one has long since past its use-by date? This being the case you`ll be able to select a stunning new bag that will happily keep all his files, documents and folders in a protective environment. Perhaps your husband insists on bringing the same old tatty holdall with him every time that you manage a break away? Make him see sense this year and buy him one of the mens bags that come from a luxurious leather range. Blokes can buy shoulder bags and backpacks, laptop bags and handy bags to carry around with them at all times. Be they for business purposes or something special for the weekend they`ll soon become attached to their new items of hand baggage. It`s a running joke in our house about the amount of bags that my fiancée has got. I recently opened a wardrobe in the spare room to be greeted by an avalanche of bags of all descriptions. Now I`m not saying it`s a problem or anything, but how many bags does a lady need? I think I`ve only got two bags to my name; one is for overnight stays when we go away and the other is a messenger bag that I use to carry folders and files when I`m on the move. By my reasoning, messenger bags need to be functional and highly durable at the same time. They messenger bag of my choice needs to be stylish enough so you don`t mine being seen with them but practical enough to carry pens, mobiles, credit cards and a host of other essentials. My choice in messenger bags is a 50/50 split between no-nonsense usability and subtle good looks. As I see it I only need one bag to transport all my stuff around my messenger bag just has to match with whatever I am wearing. If my girlfriend heard me say this she would be mortified as she`d like to have a number of messenger bags to mix and match with all of her outfits.
Briefcases, that is how men have carried their stuff around for years, but even briefcases have changed in the last few years. For a start they have had to incorporate laptops as well as a host of other gadgets. But briefcases are men’s bags or bags for men depending on how you want to phrase. A bag carried by a man is a man bag even if he would prefer to refer to it as a briefcase. The great thing about briefcases though is that they come in all shapes and sizes and don’t have to be made of leather. What is more they are carried by men and women alike.
Holdalls, that is where it all started. Not many people know it but the term handbag was first coined for the bags carried by men in the 19th century when it was considered impolite for women to have to carry anything. Instead men carried bags and they tended to be a form of holdall. They came in many shapes and sizes and evolved into luggage and an early leather holdall contender was the Gladstone bag. Now they holdalls come in a wide variety of materials and often double as a men’s gym bag. Some can be used as cabin baggage, but many double as sport's bags as well as weekend luggage. Something for the weekend sir, but be careful when travelling on budget airlines or your man bag holdall may have to go in the hold.
